The welcoming and familiar scent of a Japanese temple. Tatami (rice straw mats), warmed in the sun, with soothing temple incense.

The singular scent that can evoke the time spent in Japan by any traveler is that of the iconic tatami mats that line temples, restaurants, and homes. When tatami ages and warms, it creates a pleasant natural aroma in the space. There is no way to naturally distill the scent of the rice straw of which most tatami mats are woven, so we sourced a cypress that has undergone the same treatment process as tatami and painstakingly recreated the scent of rice straw tatami in a temple. Due to our sourcing of these unique ingredients, initial application may be strong before it warms and deepens, similar to that of the life cycle of tatami.

Perfume oil. Ingredients: fractionated coconut oil, fragrance.
All sizes feature glass bottles. The 10 ml and 4 ml both have stainless steel rollerballs, the 1.5 ml has a screw top only.

Like an actual Japanese temple

I've visited a few Buddhist temples in my time abroad. In the bottle, Tatami is mildly spicy; dried bamboo and unlit incense combine to create a wonderful and soothing olfactory experience. On the skin, the incense lights up and contributes to a very authentic temple smell (but without the added layer of sweat and food from the site's numerous visitors)! It smells gentle, resinous, comforting, and woody without being too straightforward (i.e., just smoky incense). Very evocative and nostalgic!

A New Favorite

Doesn’t even smell like I’m wearing perfume, but that I’ve really been lying on sun-baked straw, or meditating outside for a few hours, or weaving with dry grass. Like not “what perfume are you wearing?” but “Wow, where did you just come from? You smell really nice.” Blends with my natural skin scent really seamlessly so that by a few hours in it just feels very subtle - the straw is the focal point, and the incense is noticeable, but not overpowering whatsoever. All in all extremely warm and comforting but not too sweet at all. To me personally, 10/10.

Straw mats and incense

It literally does smell like straw mats and incense. I love this. But there comes a point where the two scents merge on my skin and are no longer distinct from each other, and at that time Tatami is still pleasant but sort of smells like I spent a little two long in a head shop. I don't think this happens to everyone. My sister used it and this was not something that happened. It is a very pleasant scent, regardless :)

Beautiful and original

A very unique approach to incense perfume. The opening is strong and aromatic with an almost medicinal quality to it, but then it dries down quickly to an addicting blend of temple incense and sunny, earthy, woody freshness. Lasts a long time and has decent projection but doesn't overpower. I love wearing this scent when I want to feel grounded and comforted. Tatami is truly one of a kind.

Resinous, and Warm Wood

Smelling this perfume right out of the bottle is so wonderful, it smells like a brand new sandalwood mala, and/or a wooden fan I would find in Chinatown. When I put this on my skin, it started out quite strong and resinous. For me, it almost smelled like raw frankincense. Then after a while, it began to mellow and turned into the smell of wood baking in the sun.
