Forest mushrooms, turmeric, myrrh, treemoss, dry bones, sea kelp, dark patchouli, creamy ylang.

Earthy, spicy, floral, and a little dirty, Koschei the Deathless is a strange but addicting scent that you won't want to stop smelling. The rich spice of the turmeric and dry, bleached bones adds an interesting "texture" to the creamy ylang and earthy mushrooms. This is a scent that shifts every time you smell it, sometimes the saltiness of the sea kelp comes out, other times the scent becomes darker with the deepness of the myrrh, and then the dark forest aspects really shine.

Mushrooms were chosen to symbolize the immortal, or deathless, sorcerer who is not alive, but also cannot be killed, and the sea kelp for the island in the middle of the sea where the only fragment of his mortal soul is hidden.

Betrayed by his fellow sorcerers during a great war, his body was separated from his soul so that he could be tortured through eternity without dying. Slowly going mad after being starved in a dungeon alone for decades and growing terrible to look upon, he vowed revenge on all those who wronged him, and swore he would become the most powerful sorcerer in the world.

And Koschei did become the most powerful magic wielder in all the land, second only to Baba Yaga. After he enacted his long revenge, his anger morphed into madness, and he became known as the mad, old sorcerer who stole princesses and kept them locked in towers in his kingdom, where they would become as sad and lonely as he was.

He possesses a magical horse raised by Baba Yaga, who could speak the language of man with ease and eloquence, and was faster than any beast known, which made him impossible to capture...until the powerful warrior, Princess Marya Morevna, did just that.

Koschei the Deathless is a recurring villain in Russian folklore, but makes no greater foe than when he faces off against Marya Morevna and Prince Ivan.

After the pair defeat him with the help of three powerful sorcerers and even Baba Yaga, he is killed once again--for a while. Marya Morevna and Ivan burn his remains to ashes and spend their long and happy reign sprinkling bits of his remains across every corner of the world.

After the natural death of Marya and Ivan from old age, a strange wind begins to blow. Ashes from all over the world blow to bring the pieces together, and slowly, they begin to take shape. Starting as nothing more than a shadow in the night and shrieks in the empty halls of his crumbling castle, Koschei the Deathless becomes flesh once again.

On the isolated island of Buyan, Koschei keeps a piece of his mortal soul hidden, preventing him from ever truly being killed.

Best I’ve ever smelled

As somebody who struggles with finding scents that don’t immediately oxidized to just straight sugar I have found my new holy grail. This is one of the first scent that didn’t just go sickly sweet. I know some people have said that this perfume is very offputting, but I don’t think I’ve ever smelled better the way this perfume oxidized on me. It smells like when you pick up a piece of decaying cedar, or you lift up a pile of decomposing leaf litter it’s just that very earthy raw Pre-dirt smell. I will say I was hoping it would smell a little more mushroomy, but I think those notes just didn’t come out on my skin. That said, this is my new go to perfume. In my day-to-day life I spend most of my time outdoors in the woods or Climbing and I never wanna smell unnatural in those spaces. I want to blend in with my surroundings while still wearing a fragrance that gives me a little bit of confidence, and this offer is just that.

Damp Earth

I was shocked by how non “perfumey” this scent was when I first applied it. I didn’t really know how to feel about it, but I did keep coming back to my wrists again and again. Trying it again, I think next Baba Yaga, this is one of my fave scents from Fantome so far. This is not a perfume I would wear on a date , but like Baba Yaga, it is one I would wear daily. I adore how it smells like damp forest soil and moss and mushrooms, and the resinous notes from the myrrh and earthiness from the patchouli and ylang are so good together. The spice from the turmeric comes thru the longer it’s on my skin. I would say this is a very unisex scent, it smells like Earth, neither masculine nor feminine. If you love smelling like fancy dirt, I highly recommend this.

This is the most bizarre scent on the market, I think, and I love it. It smells like a sea cave that someone, perhaps even Koschei, has been using for decades to perform magic. It’s got notes of petrichor and geosmin and much more. Absolutely spellbinding, but not for everyone. I sat with a small sample for months before buying a larger rollerball.

Oooh boy....

So I recieved Koshei as a sample in my order and it is definitely an atmospheric experience scent. I would not consider this to be a wearable scent at all unless you are playing the role of a dark, dirty witch living in a moldy mushroom cave covered in dirt. Its quite an offensive fragrance, however I do have to admire the image this scent brings forth and that it smells like an actual damp forest cave.

Dreamy, mossy mushrooms in a damp forest

This was EXACTLY what I wanted and what I've been looking for for years. My skin tends to oversextract the sweet tones in perfumes, so the other two I ordered (Duende & Vasilisa) unfortunately ended up nauseatingly sweet and thick on me. But this!!! It's like I've rubbed moss on myself. Imagine falling asleep on a mossy, damp forest floor and waking up as the sun rises, and the mushrooms greet you with morning dew on their caps. The absolute dream. Cannot recommend it enough.
